Why you need beauty business insurance?

Having business beauty insurance is essential for protecting yourself, your clients, and your livelihood. Whether you’re a nail technician, makeup artist, hairdresser, or massage therapist, accidents can happen—even in the most professional settings.

Specialist beauty insurance provides the confidence and security you need to offer your services, knowing you are protected if a claim is made. Although you might consider it a low-risk profession, there are common scenarios that demonstrate the importance of having hair and beauty insurance:

Protecting you if a client is accidentally injured.

Whilst the probability of injury to a client or a member of the public is low, you might accidentally cause an injury from a hot curling iron or hair straightener.

Public liability insurance will protect you from claims if damage is caused or a client sustained an injury whilst in your place of work and holds you accountable.

Damage to a clients’ property.

Whilst the probability of injury to a client or a member of the public is low, you might damage an expensive item of clothing with nail products. The repairs could be expensive, and a client could claim against you for the costs. Public liability would also protect you in such instances.

Avoid costly repairs and replacements to your beauty equipment.

You may have invested in expensive beauty equipment for your business. This might get lost, whilst providing treatments on the road. Alternatively, items could get damaged if you store them in a premises you work at.

Equipment cover can avoid costly replacements in case your equipment is lost, damaged or stolen.

Our experts explain why...

“Our insurance policies for nail technicians, makeup artists, hairdressers, and therapists are designed to protect you financially if you accidentally cause injury or damage to a client’s property or someone else’s belongings.

We cater to small business owners, freelancers and professionals who don’t have their own salon premises, including those working as contractors for other businesses or providing home visit services.

Over the years, we’ve refined our policies to not only cover potential liability claims but also to protect your specialist equipment—so if something goes wrong, you can claim with confidence.”

Frequently
Asked Questions

Hairdresser Insurance

Does my policy cover my employees?

If you have employees, you’re legally required to have employers’ liability insurance. This can be included in your policy and covers you if an employee is injured or becomes ill as a result of working for you.

How much public liability cover do hairdressers need?

We offer up to £5 million in public liability cover. The amount you need may depend on your specific business activities and any contractual requirements. Consider the maximum possible loss your business could face in the event of a claim.

Does my policy include product liability insurance?

Product liability is included in your policy. This covers you if a product you’ve sold or used causes injury or damage, subject to policy limits.

Am I covered for mobile hairdressing?

Yes, our policy covers mobile hairdressers. You’re protected while working at clients’ homes or other locations, and your equipment is covered during transit.

What activities can you cover me for?

We can cover the following activities as standard under our Hairdressing Insurance policy:

The use of:

– Clippers/trimmers and cut-throat razors
– Electrical equipment such as curlers, straighteners, hairdryers and tongs

The application of:
– Bleaches, dyes, perms and tints
– Hair extensions (subject to you being qualified for the extension method you are using)
– Nail polish (including the application of acrylic coatings, cutting and shaping of nails), false eyelashes and semi-permanent eyelash extensions
– Tooth jewellery

The activities of:
– Ear piercing using a gun and stud
– Eyebrow plucking (including threading and waxing), shaping, dyeing, tinting and perming including semi-permanent mascara
– Washing, cutting, styling and drying of hair

If your chosen treatment is not listed, just get in touch and speak to one of our friendly advisors to see if we can cover you.

Do you need to see my qualifications/certificates?

We do not need to see proof of your qualifications for you to be able to take out our insurance. We do, however, require you and any employees to hold the relevant qualifications or certificates for the services you are providing. Please note, that we do not accept qualifications that are obtained by a method of remote learning (e.g. internet-based training courses). If you need to make a claim on your Hairdressing Insurance policy then we may request to see these documents. Should we discover that you are not qualified to carry out the insured activities, we may reject your claim.

Am I covered if a customer doesn’t like their hair cut/treatment?

No, this is something that is not covered. Our policy is designed to cover Liability issues, such as injury to a third party, such as a customer, or damage to their property. For example, our policy would cover a mobile hairdresser if they were to burn a client’s scalp with curling tongs, or with an erroneously applied bleach.

Do I need to do a patch test on a client prior to using hair dye or other such products?

You would need to do a patch test at least 24 hours prior to using a product on a client for the first time and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. However, if the manufacturer states that patch testing should be done more regularly, or each time that a product is to be used, then you should adhere to those instructions.

Can you insure my hair products and stock?

Yes, our Equipment Cover benefit includes protection for things such as styling products, treatment items and other stock you may use or sell in your salon. Like your specific hairdressing equipment, it is covered against loss, theft and damage up to the value selected on your policy. We even provide £250 worth of cover free of charge with every policy taken out.

I have students working for me while they study to become a hairdresser, are they covered under this policy?

If you include Employers’ Liability on your policy, we can provide cover for students as long as they are supervised.

What happens if I have a claim under the Equipment Cover section of my policy?

If your equipment requires repair or is deemed to be broken and you have a valid claim, we will cover the costs of hiring new equipment to replace it while the original item is being replaced, or until your claim is settled, whichever is soonest.

Are my work phone and laptop covered under the equipment cover section?

No, we only provide cover for the items you use to provide your insured treatments, such as scissors, clippers, salon chair and razors.

Massage Therapist Insurance

Do you cover massage students?

No, our Therapist Insurance policy will only protect those who qualified in their chosen treatments. The qualification must be obtained by an accredited awarding body.

Do you need to see my massage therapy qualification certificates?

No. You will only need to produce your qualification certificate(s) in the event of a claim. When you purchase your insurance we will ask you to declare that you have a suitable qualification for the activity that you require cover for.

Do I need insurance if I’m just starting out as a massage therapist?

Yes, it’s advisable to have insurance from the moment you start practicing. Our policy covers you for claims made during the period specified when taking out the policy, arising from any act, error or omission occurring on or after the retroactive date specified in the policy schedule. This protects you from potential claims right from the start of your career.

Does your insurance for massage therapists cover me if I work from home, in a salon, or as a mobile therapist?

Yes, our insurance covers you regardless of where you practice – whether it’s from your home, in a rented space, a salon, or as a mobile therapist visiting clients. Our policy refers to this as your “Business Venue,” which includes purpose-built venues where you have permission to undertake business activities.

Can I add or remove therapies from my policy mid-term?

Yes, you can add or remove therapies to your policy. Should you wish to make modifications to your insurance for your massage therapy business, please contact us to add or remove therapies from your existing policy. Any changes may affect your premium.

Am I covered for working at events or exhibitions?

Yes, our insurance policy covers you while working in connection with your business, which would include events or exhibitions. However, if you’re organising the event itself, you might need additional event insurance.

Do I need insurance if I’m only working part-time or occasionally?

Yes, as long as you’re practicing massage therapy as part of your declared business, you should have insurance for massage therapists, regardless of how often you work.

Is my massage equipment covered under this insurance?

Equipment coverage is available as an optional add-on. If selected, it covers accidental loss, damage, or theft of your business equipment up to the limit stated in your policy schedule.

I’m a qualified massage therapist but I’m also studying a new therapy. Am I covered to practice this new therapy?

You’re only covered for therapies you’re fully qualified in and have declared at the time of purchase. If you’re still studying, you’re not covered to practice that therapy professionally until you’re qualified. You can add new therapies to your policy once you’re certified.

What happens if I take a break from practicing? Can I suspend my insurance?

If you’re taking an extended break, you may need to cancel your policy. However, be aware that any claims made for past work would not be covered once the policy is cancelled. It’s best to contact the insurer to discuss the best option for your situation.

Does this insurance cover me for working abroad as a massage therapist?

Our standard policy covers you for in the United Kingdom. If you need coverage for work abroad, you should contact the insurer to discuss international coverage options.

Nail Tech Insurance

What should I do if a client has an allergic reaction to a product I’ve used?

First, ensure the client receives appropriate medical attention. Then, contact Peach PI on 0330 3141 592 as soon as possible to report the incident. Your policy may cover claims arising from such situations, provided you’ve followed proper procedures like patch testing.

Do I need to inform the insurer if I get new qualifications or start offering new treatments?

Yes, it’s important to keep us updated about any changes to your qualifications or the treatments you offer. This ensures you’re properly covered for all your activities.

Am I covered if I accidentally damage a client’s property while working?

Yes, the public liability portion of the insurance typically covers accidental damage to client property. This is particularly important for mobile technicians working in clients’ homes.

Does the insurance cover me if I work from home?

Yes, our nail tech insurance is designed to cover you regardless of where you work – at home, in a client’s home, or in a dedicated salon. The coverage is tied to you and your business activities rather than a specific location.

How much is nail technician insurance?

The cost varies depending on the level of cover and your circumstances. Policies typically start from around £40 per year but can be more if you add optional coverages.

Do nail technicians need insurance?

Yes, insurance is important for nail technicians. Without proper coverage, your business would be responsible for legal costs and compensation if a client takes action over an incident before, during, or after a treatment.

What qualifications do I need to buy nail technician insurance?

As a nail technician seeking insurance coverage, you must hold relevant qualifications from industry-recognised course providers. This requirement applies to all insured activities and treatments that you offer in your practice.

It’s important to note that not all types of qualifications are accepted for insurance purposes. Specifically, remote learning qualifications, such as those obtained through internet-based courses, are not recognised under our policy. We believe that hands-on, in-person training is essential for developing the skills necessary to perform nail treatments safely and effectively.

While we don’t typically ask for proof of qualifications when you purchase your policy, it’s crucial to maintain accurate records of your certifications. In the event of a claim, you may be asked to provide evidence of your qualifications. This helps us ensure that all covered treatments were performed by a properly trained professional. Keeping your qualifications up to date and readily accessible can help streamline the claims process if the need arises.

Do you need to see my nail tech qualifications or certificates?

We do not need to see proof of your qualifications for you to be able to take out our insurance. We do, however, require you and any employees to hold the relevant qualifications or certificates for the services you are providing. Please note, that we do not accept qualifications that are obtained by a method of remote learning (e.g. internet-based training courses).

If you need to make a claim on your policy then we may request to see these documents. Should we discover that you are not qualified to carry out the insured activities, we may reject your claim.

Are my nail tools & equipment covered?

Yes, up to a value of £250 (£75 excess) as standard. Should you require a higher level of cover because the value of your equipment exceeds £250, you can increase your cover during our online quote form.

Am I covered to work from home as a nail tech?

Yes. Our policy is designed to cover freelance and mobile nail technicians. Any policy that you take out will cover you and your business, as opposed to a specific address. This means that you’re covered regardless of whether you are working at home, in a client’s home or within a dedicated nail salon.

Can you cover me to do treatments abroad as a nail tech?

No, our policy is designed to cover anywhere within the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, or the Isle on Man. There is no overseas cover available.
